Confessions from the Morgan sisters time

We have to confess our ignorance as we never paid attention to any New Year’s traditions. We can hardly even stay awake long enough to ring in the new year.

Rochelle has told us that she wants to stay up and bang on pots and pans and shout “Happy New Years” on the front porch.

For one thing, the kid is almost 6 years old and that is way late past her bedtime. Second, Mommy and Auntie would cry as WE like to go to bed and sleep. And third, The neighbors would JUST LOVE that!!

It was not until we started planning for our blog did we realize that, in many parts of the world, Traditions are very important for bringing good luck to the new year.

Okay, we can all agree that we need all the help and good luck we can get for 2021 after this horse sized pile of crapola called 2020!

Black Eyed Peas Beans and Ham and New Years Traditions.

So how does our Black Eyed Peas Beans and Ham recipe be considered lucky? In many parts of the world, black eyed peas stand for coins.

The ham in our recipe is pork; many consider pork as a sign of progress as a pig is always rooting around and plowing forward.

Other food related traditions for good luck is eating leafy greens like collard greens because green is a sign of money.

Another tradition is eating cornbread as it is gold colored (and stands for gold) and therefore people will prosper.

Now there are many, many superstitions and traditions that different cultures practice. If you like food history then here is a good site on food traditions around the world: https://www.womansday.com/food-recipes/food-drinks/g2085/good-luck-foods-for-the-new-year/

The making of our Black Eyed Peas Beans and Ham

In this recipe, we mixed black eyed peas with a 15 bean soup mix, sans seasoning, for flavor, and lentils! We really like the flavor of all the different beans and lentils together. And it is so filling too!

Normally, this recipe is shown using ham hocks, but we really prefer having chunks of tender ham to go with those creamy Black Eyed peas and Beans.

Ah, talk about a match made in Heaven! This is comfort food at its finest. Minus the gas….just hold your nose or take Gas X. It is, however, very nutritious for you.

This recipe is very simple and basic with the main ingredients being listed in the title. Otherwise, We add the water and occasionally some garlic powder. Really, the natural flavors are super delicious!

TIP: Either hand sort your beans, to check for small pebbles, or rinse your dried beans first before putting in the crock pot.

Wrap up time

We love using our crock pot for so many recipes including our Black Eyed Peas Beans and Ham! The recipe is very easy to make yet the natural flavors are so cozy and filling. As an added bonus, you can use this meal as a lucky New Year dish!

Hi, my name is Yvonne. I am the other half of the Morgan sisters. We are, believe it or not, twins! Fraternal twins at that. We live in the bountiful Willamette valley where the seasons are mild and the harvests are plentiful. I have a beautiful little red headed daughter named Rochelle.
