We are in love with our Crockpot Sweet Potatoes! We grew up with very traditional Thanksgiving dinners that included the basics such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, buns and cranberry sauce.
It was not until we were adults did we encounter sweet potatoes.
The beginning of our love affair with sweet potatoes
It was pure love at first taste! And maybe, just maybe, a tiny bit of resentment towards our parents for us missing out on such a wonderful dish.
Talk about feeling deprived!
Well, with all honesty, Yvonne probably wouldn’t have touched them with a ten foot stick, but still…you get the idea.
Our love only grew stronger when we realized that you could cook sweet potatoes in a crock pot.
Talk about a joyful moment!
Not only did the Crockpot give us a chance to do a bunch of other things while the sweet potatoes slowly cooked but it made the house smell like Heaven!
The amazing smells of crockpot sweet potatoes!
The house smells so wonderful while they are cooking. Warm, inviting scents of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and ginger fill the air. The aroma just makes us want to curl up with blankets and books while it is cooking.
Sadly though, the rest of the meal has to be cooked as well.
Sweet Potatoes are a favorite part of our Thanksgiving dinner. The creamy texture and comforting flavor of the spices are delightful next to the stuffing and mashed potatoes.
The makings of Crockpot Sweet Potatoes
This is about as simple a recipe as you can get. The hardest part is peeling and chopping them bad boys!
After that, its a matter of throwing everything into the crockpot and going about your business.
Awww…smell the sweet spices and sweeter potatoes…so very good!
Okay, back at it. Cook in the crockpot for 4 hours or until done.
Tip: if they come apart when poked by a fork, they are fall apart done.
Get it? Fall apart done!?!
Oh well, we tried to make a joke!
Prepping time
Here is where you have a choice, based on personal taste. You can leave the sweet potatoes in chunks and serve (we did that last year), or you can mash with a potato masher for somewhat blended with chunky bits in the mix, or you can use a blender for a smoother texture.
We did use a blender for ours. Yummy!
Tip: if you plan to mash the sweet potatoes, then drain them in a strainer first. Unless you like really runny potatoes.
Funny behind the scenes moment (where is the camera when you need it!?!) we did not, in fact, strain the extra juices off and ended up with said runny potatoes.
We needed a picture but couldn’t have it looking soggy. So what does Yvonne do?
She gets a straw and slurps up the excess liquid!! By the time I could stop laughing long enough to get a picture, she stopped.
Drat! Next time!
PS. Only family members ate the sweet potatoes so relax on the germ thing! Everyone is still kicking.
Ideas for Sweet Potato Toppings
We don’t normally top our sweet potatoes, they are just perfect all on their own. However, if you are a sweet potato topper, feel free to top with either of the following:
- Miniature marshmallows. Cover the top of the potatoes after they are mashed, and put the lid back on the crockpot for about 10 minutes.
- Use these ingredients to top the sweet potatoes for a buttery, crunchy topping. Mix together in a small bowl, and spread over the top.
- 2 tablespoons butter melted
- 2 tablespoons pecans chopped
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
HOW TO STORE LEFTOVERS
Refrigerator: Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Freezer: Sweet Potatoes can easily be frozen. Scoop it into a zippered bag or a freezer container and be sure to label it with the date.
Reheat: When you are ready to reheat, simply give it a stir, maybe give it an extra dash of cinnamon or nutmeg, and pop it in the microwave.
