Four Cheese Zucchini Strata
Jump to recipe

This Four Cheese Zucchini Strata is a tasty way to use up part of those zucchini and yellow squash from the garden. The basic ingredients of a strata are as follows: eggs, cheese, and bread.

From basic strata to add on ingredients

Once you have mastered the makings of a strata, then you can add in different ingredients that sound good to you. We use a lot of veggies like zucchini and summer squash from our garden, but you can add in meats like ham or even smoked chicken (hmm…that sounds yummy!)

Zucchini in our four cheese strata please!

We make a great deal of zucchini based meals during the summer such as this four cheese zucchini strata recipe that we saw and decided to try out.

Differences compared

Now there is quite a difference between a strata and a frittata. A frittata is rather like a fancy open faced omelette (just don’t insult by comparing to said omelette) but it is so much better.

A strata is similar to a frittata but, oh so much more complex to make. A strata is a layered casserole that requires TLC with the making. Some relate a strata to a “soufflé or a puffed up casserole.

Hats off to a great description of what a strata is

Thank you to the following site:

One thing to keep in mind when making a strata. Plan ahead, as this will need a minimum of 2 hours if not overnight in the fridge to let all of the gorgeous Focaccia soak up the egg.

Strata fresh from fridge

There really isn’t a whole lot of extra work involved vs any other dish needing chopped zucchini and sauteing it. It’s just knowing that there’s a chill period for all the flavors to soak in and marry.

Source of our chosen recipe review below

The recipe comes from Better Homes and Gardens, https://www.bhg.com, and features layers of luscious zucchini, Focaccia, and 4 glorious cheeses. It turned out excellent with the recipe well written and easy to follow

Use the right bread!

Key point here: make sure to use the right kind of bread! We learned this lesson when we couldn’t find any Foccacia (it just was not the same….and the bread didn’t have the right texture) The recipe calls for Focaccia and rightly so! Foccacia is an Italian flat bread that is oven baked. It absorbs the egg well while chillin in the fridge but does not get too soggy or disintegrate.
