We like to serve our stroganoff over rice, egg noodles, or small cut pasta such as orzo. What do you like to serve your Easy Hamburger Stroganoff over? Tell us in the comments below!
So what is Stroganoff and where did it come from?
We like to include this tidbit of info in much or our recipes and reviews. It is exciting to see the origin and history behind some of the recipes we make (and sometimes take for granted).
Thank you to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beef_Stroganoff for providing a knowledgeable background for stroganoff! Stroganoff originated from Russia. It is basically sautéed pieces of meat served in a sauce with Smetana (sour cream).
There are a variety of books on the history of recipes. If you are curious type of person, then check out this link: https://www.amazon.com/History-Food-100-Recipes/dp/B01L9E4HJK. Some of these books are going on the Morgan Sisters Christmas wish list!
The making of our Easy Hamburger Stroganoff
There are many, many variations of the original recipe that range from how to make the sauce to what spices to add. Some of them are pretty interesting too. It is nice to find a recipe and be able to adjust it to meet your (or our) own needs. Hence the holding of the mushrooms!
Our one skillet recipe is easy to follow and quick to make. Its all about the browning of the hamburger and sautéing of the onions. Add in the spices and sauce ingredients to magically turn plain old hamburger into yummy Stroganoff.
Rice, pasta, egg noodles, oh my!
The hardest part is deciding if you want egg noodles, rice, or some other pasta to serve your made from scratch stroganoff over. It is a good idea to decide even before you start cooking!
Tip:
First, mix the sour cream with cornstarch, Second, add the mixture at the end as the thickener. Remember: mix well so you don’t have lumps.
We wrote to use 2-3 tbsp. of cornstarch because this will give readers an option in personal preference. The amount of cornstarch you use determines the consistency of the sauce.
Do you like your sauce really thick or more on the runny side? We tend to vary, sometimes the sauce needs to be a bit thicker, almost like a stew, for more comfort!! It seems the weather dictates our cooking! The colder it is, the thicker the sauce is. It somehow wards away the chill:)
Making hamburger Stroganoff healthy
We used lean ground beef and low fat sour cream to make our version a little bit healthier. In addition, we used beef consommé instead of a creamy soup for a base. You can get low sodium beef consommé or something similar to cut down on salt intake.
You can choose what fits into your taste and lifestyle when it comes to using a pasta or rice to serve the stroganoff over.
