Long have mashed potatoes graced the holidays. Placed beside fanciful sides and the main turkey, this plain and unassuming side dish is the very glue that holds the meal together!

Mashed potatoes, poor things, are by far the most underrated dish to take up space at a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal.

Potatoes, in whatever form, are an important staple in many parts of the world. Potatoes even have their own website! https://www.potatogoodness.com/.

The many benefits of mashed potatoes-creamy or not!

Yet these mashed potatoes are the very dependable side dish that can be as “plain” or traditional as one would like or they can be all dolled up with sour cream, cheeses, chives, bacon, etc.

Kinda like a baked potato only smooth and creamy!

Mashed potatoes are really hard to mess up on too. It would take considerable skill on the cooks part to make this creamy mash potato side dish into something inedible.

Yet, it can and does happen. Yes, there are people out there (maybe even you) that don’t have a great deal of experience cooking and are looking for something simple and near foolproof to make.

Which brings us to our very simple, very traditional (some would dare say plain), reliable recipe for creamy mash potatoes!

Memories of childhood

Back in the day, Mom used milk mostly for mashing the potatoes then topped them off with a dash of half and half and butter. We thought they were the best thing ever!

There is a comfort and coziness in the safety of a simple recipe such as our creamy mashed potatoes.

In our Crockpot Sweet Potatoes blog, we talked about how traditional our childhood holiday meals were. While It is nice to mix things up a bit and to try new things….don’t leave old friends behind.

In todays world, everyone wants newer, flashier, more unusual dishes to grace their tables. But the newer and unusual dishes do not always live up to expectations.

Then what? Someone has to make a last ditch fast food run!

No! The horrors of MacDonald’s drive through on Thanksgiving! Say it isn’t so!

No, it is not! Why? Because you made sure to include mash potatoes in your menu.

The basics of making mash potatoes with a dash of creaminess

The hardest part of this recipe is peeling all those potatoes! You might feel like your in the Army or something if you have to peel enough potatoes to feed the masses.

Disclaimer: Our knowledge of peeling tons of potatoes in the Army is based on funny cartoons although whether it is true is up for debate

See recipe below but rest assured because this is an easy recipe to follow and make.

You can dress up your creamy mash potatoes how you like. Remember the above mentioned reference to a baked potato

You can even dress down by using low-fat milk and margarine instead if you really need to skinny up the recipe.

We hope you like some good old mashed potatoes like we do! Sometimes simpler is better.

We would love to hear from you so drop us a line!
